180 Degree Rule
When two characters in a scene are having a conversation and the film is trying to portray that they are facing each other whilst talking to each other. if the camera is over over the right shoulder of character A when looking at character B then the camera will have to be on the same side of the imaginary 180 degree line between them. This rule is not set in stone so sometimes it is broken but only works if its done effectively, in some instances when films do break this rule it can confuse the audience as to which direction they are facing.
Diegetic and Non Diegetic Sound
Diegetic sound also known as actual sound where the source of the sound is visible on the screen. This includes things such as characters speaking and sounds made from objects or actions in the story.
Non Diegetic sound also known as commentary sound is where the source of the sound is not on screen or related to the sounds and actions on screen. This includes things such as music in films to set the mood and if a film has a narrator then all of their speech is non diegetic sound unless they are speaking directly to a character and they can hear them.
Match Cut
A film editing technique to transition between shots when they are connected in some way. This could be two different objects, spaces or compositions which geographically match to create continuity between the shots and to show they are related in some way.
Jump Cut
This cut between shots can represent a passage of time in the same geographical location. They do this by varying the camera angle by at least 30 degrees of the original shot and usually a change in shot type hen done effectively.
